West Coast Equine Reproduction Symposium

UC Davis is hosting the West Coast Equine Reproduction Symposium: Diagnostic Tests and Therapeutic Protocols at the Santa Ynez Valley Marriott, Buellton, CA, November 6-8, 2025.

The West Coast Equine Reproduction Symposium
is an educational event for anyone interested in the topic, including horse owners/breeders, veterinarians, and students. This year’s event will provide a two-day forum for the exchange of timely topics on reproductive management of the problem mare and stallion, assisted reproductive techniques, and foal health. Wet labs will be held at Alamo Pintado Equine Medical Center.

Services for mares include transvaginal aspiration of eggs, diagnostic workups for infertile mares, artificial insemination with cooled and frozen semen, ultrasonographic pregnancy diagnosis, twin reduction, pregnant mare care, obstetrics, and foaling management. In addition, clinicians manage mares experiencing dystocia (difficult foaling), working in close collaboration with experts specializing in surgery, neonatology, critical patient care and anesthesia.

Stallion services include fertility evaluation, investigation of infertility, stallion breeding management, semen collection and evaluation, preparation and shipment of cooled semen, and freezing of semen.

The Veterinary Assisted Reproduction (VetART) Laboratory provides advanced reproductive technologies including intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), in vitro fertilization (IVF), embryo biopsy services, embryo freezing, cell isolation and preservation for future cloning and more. The laboratory can receive shipped eggs from anywhere in the United States for embryo production with ICSI, followed by embryo storage or shipping for embryo transfer. It is also one of the few assisted reproductive technology centers in the world that is equipped with the ability to monitor growing equine embryos with a live embryo monitoring system, allowing embryologists to precisely evaluate embryo formation.

The CEH works closely with clinicians and staff of the service and the VetART Lab to support teaching and research efforts. Our Teaching Herd horses provide hands-on opportunities for veterinary students and residents to learn and practice important skills. The horses also contribute to research conducted by our equine reproduction faculty that supports immediate and future advances in the field.
